Pain was the first thing that registered as I regained consciousness. My whole body hurt. It even hurt to think. I tried remembering back to why I was unconscious and in so much pain but my mind was drawing a blank.

The screams were the next thing that registered. Loud, screeching from the people around me. I opened my eyes and immediately closed them as the sun blinded me. But being outside and in the sun meant that I wasn’t where I was supposed to be…which was on a plane back to L.A. We had obviously crashed – the only question was where, and if a rescue crew would come looking for us.

I forced my eyes open again, prepared this time for the blinding sun. I disregarded the people screaming around and started to look myself over. I could see a few visible cuts and scrapes, my shoulder was killing me, but nothing looked too serious. I started to sit up and my vision swam. Ok, so I had a concussion, not the worst injury to have, all things considered.

The people screaming around me hadn’t stopped – in fact it might have gotten worse. I forced myself to stay in an upright-seated position. Once my vision stopped swimming I took a good look around at the destruction. People were strewn all around me. Some were injured, some not. Parts of the plane were mixed in with the people. It was a horrible sight to have to witness.

Something was nagging me at the back of my mind. I was forgetting something, something very important. I looked around and light reflecting off of something caught my eye. I had no idea why I was drawn to it, but I kept moving. I ignored the pain of my body, my injuries, and kept moving.

I spotted her blonde hair as I crawled through the wreckage. Tears started to fill my eyes but I continued to crawl toward her. The screams of the others all faded away and all I was left with was her. When I was kneeling next to her I knew she was dead. Her neck was at an odd angle, her legs both broken, and a huge piece of metal was lodged in her chest. She wasn’t breathing, but I reached for her neck anyway. Gently I placed my fingers against her skin and felt for a pulse. I waited but there wasn’t one.

“Buffy,” I cried out, loud enough for her to have heard my voice. “Oh god – Buffy!” I cried and collapsed beside her. My face lying against hers and I cried.

I have no idea how long I laid there. But the screaming and crying of the other passengers had died down. I wiped the tears from my face and looked back down at my sister. I rose to my knees and gripped the metal chunk in her chest. She wouldn’t have wanted to be seen like this. I took a moment and then pulled. I cried out as my left arm burned with pain, but the metal was removed from her. I dropped it to the sand next to her and rearranged her shirt to cover the wound. Gently I moved her head, ignoring the crunching sounds and straightened it. Gently I did the same with each of her legs. As I straightened out her arms, along her sides, her rings glistened in the sun. Fresh tears came to my eyes, and again I was lost in hysterics.

I threw up a few feet from her body. I had managed to painfully scramble away before doing so. I didn’t think it would be right to lose my insides next to her. My sister was dead. My sister, my flesh and blood, and the only true family I had left, was dead. I couldn’t imagine how her friends were going to take it. And immediately I wondered if Faith, Willow, or any of the other Slayers felt her death. I wondered if Angel did. That thought made my stomach turn over and I threw up whatever didn’t come up the first time. I spit what was left in my mouth out and wiped my face clean with the back of my hand.

I moved back to Buffy’s side and slowly took in the rest of the crash. There was rubble spread along the beach. People were strewn all over; most had started to congregate and attempt to help one another. I knew I could be of help, but I didn’t want to leave Buffy’s side. Another few moments passed and I finally struggled to get to my feet. She would have been helping those who needed it.

“You were a lot of help out there. Where’d you learn how to do all that?” the doctor, Jack I think, thanked me after we got most of the situations under control. I just shrugged. He didn’t need to hear the truth. That it cut down on hospital visits, doctor’s bills, and free time to simply learn how to suture small wounds, give out low grade pain meds and reset broken bones. There were emergency situations I’m sure that I couldn’t handle, like a Slayer left beaten and drained, because quite frankly I’m not a doctor – or a miracle worker. But what I had done today was nothing.
“Your shoulder…” he mentioned it and immediately it started to hurt again. I looked at it a little miffed. “I can put it back in place,” he offered. I glanced at it again and realized it would be a bitch to try to reset it myself.

“Ok,” I quietly agreed.

“Good, let me get some meds and then I’ll get Sayid over here to help,” Jack suggested but I shook my head.

“No pain meds. You are going to need them for more important injuries,” I declined the medicine.

“And you don’t think that you need them. Your arm has been dislocated. It’s going to hurt to put it back.”

“No,” I firmly told him and he studied my face.

“Fine. Stay right here and I’ll get Sayid,” he said. I sat where he left me for minutes. Finally he and the middle-eastern man came over to me.

“Ok. We’re going to set it, then Sayid will wrap it up as best as he can,” the doctor told me. I nodded and steeled myself. The two men got into position around me and then, as quickly as possible they reset my shoulder. I groaned as it moved back where it belonged. Tears sprung to my eyes and I blinked rapidly to try to keep them at bay.

“All done,” Sayid told me and gingerly started to wrap my arm and shoulder, making me a sling. Jack offered me a small tight smile and walked away. “I’m impressed you did not scream,” he quietly commented as he finished up my sling.

“I’ve endured worse,” I whispered.

“Why?”

“Why not?” I shot back. He didn’t have an answer for that.

“Let me help you up. Where are you camping out?” he offered and startd to help me to my feet without waiting for an answer. I looked in the direction of where my sister’s body lay. He followed my gaze and a small frown came to his face. “Perhaps you should sleep with the others tonight,” he suggested and I wrenched my arm away from him.

“No,” I screamed, stumbling a few steps away from him in the deep sand.

“She’s dead,” he quietly told me. “It isn’t safe to sleep around the dead,” he added, with a sorrowful tone.

“No…” I shook my head and attempted to run but the sand was too deep and I lost my footing. I started to fall and I couldn’t balance myself because of my sling. My good arm flailed helplessly in front of me. I was almost face down in the sand when two arms wrapped around my waist and halted my fall. As gently as he could he lifted me back to my feet. He held on a few more seconds until he was sure I was stable.

“Let me carry you to her,” he offered. I shook my head and stepped out of his embrace. I moved away from him, a step at a time, and down the beach towards Buffy. Sayid didn’t try to touch me again, but I could feel him hovering behind me as I continued my walk.

I collapsed next to her body and stared down at her still face. She looked so peaceful. I took her hand in my uninjured right hand and squeezed it. It took me a minute to realize that there were no rings on her finger. I slowly opened my hand, finger by finger, and looked down. Her engagement ring was missing.
