“Hello?” Dawn answered on the third ring.

“Hello, this is Police Chief Phil Jones, may I speak with Joyce Summers, please?” the man introduced himself.

Dawn gasped; she couldn’t help the sudden intake of air at the shock of hearing someone ask for her mother. It would never get old or any easier when someone asked about her.

“Ma’am?” Chief Jones asked again as the silence stretched on.

“I’m sorry, she passed away six years ago,” Dawn forced herself to whisper into the phone.

“I uh…” he hesitated for a moment. Dawn heard him let out a deep sigh into the receiver, causing static to bounce through the line. “I didn’t know. I’m very sorry for your loss,” he finally added.

“I’m her daughter, Dawn. Is there anything I can help you with?”

“I’m afraid not,” Chief Jones quickly cut in.

Dawn raised an eyebrow at the Police Chief’s abrupt manner on the phone but then realized he couldn’t see her. “Well okay then,” Dawn snapped.

“May I ask you something?”

Dawn took a deep breath, trying to force the tears back, and barely succeeding. “Sure,” she finally agreed though she was on the verge of full-on tears.

“How exactly did your mother die?” the chief delicately asked her.

“Brain aneurysm. The doctors never saw it coming,” Dawn explained.

“Thank you for your time, Ms. Summers. Again, I am very sorry for your loss,” Chief Jones expressed his condolences.

“Thanks,” Dawn weakly replied and let her thumb slide over to hit the off button. She silently slid down living room wall, cradling the cordless phone to her chest. She didn’t try to stop the emotions as they raced through her body, tears streaming down her face, and her sides aching from the heart-wrenching sobs.

Sam ended the call and scratched Joyce Summers formerly Mitchell off his list.

Thanks! I am not sure I am going to be continuing this particular verse, but I do have every intention to use this plot idea for another verse.
