Detective John Munch paused outside the victim’s hospital room. She’d been found beaten, raped and left for dead. Somehow she’d managed to crawl out of that alley and someone took enough pity on her to call for help.
“We going in?” Fin, his partner, asked.
“Yeah,” John answered and let out a slow breath. Some days he really hated his job.
Fin pushed the door open and Munch followed after him. He held his breath, knowing the scene was going to be horrible. The initial report of the girl’s condition hadn’t been an exaggeration. She was covered with bruises and cuts, visible wherever her flesh was exposed.
“Jesus,” Fin swore under his breath. Fin cleared his throat and began. “Ms. Summers,” he called out as they moved closer to her bed.
The name had been bugging John since he’d been given the case. There was no way there was more than one Buffy Summers in this world.
The blonde girl on the bed turned her face toward them. John sucked in a gasp of air at her face. The report had said they’d left her for dead – it was a miracle she’d survived. John had to wonder if she felt that way.
“Yes,” she replied, meeting Fin’s gaze before looking at Munch.
He watched recognition settle into her eyes and his stomach sank as he realized where he’d seen those green eyes before.
Yesterday he’d attended a series of lectures on languages. One of the lecturers had been Dawn Summers. Sister of Buffy, his victim. Both daughters of sorts to one Rupert Giles, the real reason he’d been invited and attended the lecture in the first place.
“I’m Detective Tutuola and this is my partner Detective Munch. We’re with the Special Victims Unit. If you’re up to it, we’d like to talk with you about what happened last night,” Fin continued.
“Ok,” Buffy answered.

A petite blonde made her way up to Rupert’s side. For a brief moment John wondered if she was Rupert’s girlfriend, wondered why his friend was dating someone young enough to be his daughter.
A small familiar smile crossed Rupert’s face as he took her in. “Is Dawn well?” Rupert asked the blonde.
“Nerves are still getting to her but she’ll be fine,” the blonde answered and then turned to John and offered him a smile. She was stunning. Her sparkling green eyes stood out against her tanned skin. And she looked comfortable and feminine in her flowing skirt and sleeveless shirt.
“Hi,” the blonde greeted him and extended a delicate hand. “I’m Buffy,” she introduced herself.
He caught Rupert rolling his eyes before John took her hand in his own. Her handshake was firm, stronger and more confident than most of the women he’d shaken hands with. “John Munch,” he replied.
“John and I have been friends for a long time, Buffy,” Rupert explained.
“Yes, Rupert and I had quite the time gallivanting around London,” John supplied with a small smile. Those had been the days, despite the trouble they’d ultimately managed to get themselves into. John didn’t expect Buffy’s eyes to darken at the mention of London.
“Buffy had the misfortune of meeting Ethan,” Rupert explained as he watched the petite blonde tense and John nodded.
“So you knew Ethan too?” Buffy asked as she fixed him with a hard stare.
He met her gaze and saw something lurking beneath the surface. In that moment he knew without a doubt that he’d just met Rupert’s Sunnydale Slayer.
~*~*~*~*~
“Munch,” Fin’s voice brought him back to the present, to the hospital room with a beaten, broken rape victim. He’d zoned out through Fin’s entire interview.
“Yeah?” Munch answered and cleared his throat.
“Anything you’d like to add?” Fin asked with noticeable sarcasm.
John wasn’t sure how to broach the subject without having Fin suggest he seek help – lots of mental help.
Buffy must have sensed his question or his struggle because she gave him his answer.
“They are well within your jurisdiction, Detective Munch,” she explained and tears filled her eyes. “I never thought I’d have to worry about this on top of everything else.” The confession made her seem even more tiny, curled up in her sterile hospital sheets.
Munch nodded, satisfied that he could actually find the men responsible for this horrible act. If those guys had done this to any other girl, she’d be dead from the multitude of injuries they’d rained down upon her body.
“Thank you for your time and help,” Munch quietly said as he turned to leave her room. Fin echoed his words.
Munch had just reached the door when Buffy spoke again.
“John,” she voice was soft, but he could hear an underlying strength behind it.
Fin stopped and raised an eyebrow at John. He knew he hadn’t given her their first names in his introduction. Both detectives turned to face her again. She’d struggled to sit up on her own and John could see how much pain it’d caused her.
“Let’s hope you find them before Giles does,” Buffy calmly stated but he could see the fire in her eyes.
Munch felt his throat tighten at the words. He knew that it was true. He’d seen Ripper in action before, knew what he was capable of doing without a loved one being involved.
Munch offered a slight nod. “I’ll do my best.”

Date: 2009-05-11 03:47 pm (UTC)This was darkly fantastic and I wasn't quite sure how you could write Buffy in this situation but honestly, this part:
“I never thought I’d have to worry about this on top of everything else.” The confession made her seem even more tiny, curled up in her sterile hospital sheets.
HUGE sucker punch and perfectly wrapped it all up. It says it all, cause really who would've thought that B would have to worry about that. Reminder that she's not infallible even to humans.
Thank you so much! I loved this!!
