I sensed her as she walked up behind me. Her energy danced over my skin, sending chills down my spine. It had been a long time since I had felt her, longer still since I had felt another Slayer. She was supposed to be a Slayer, she was never supposed to be called, but the Alliance had meddled where they didn’t belong.

She appeared off to my left with a small smile on her face. Her brown hair had gotten longer and looked much healthier than the last time. It hung down her back, almost blending in with her dress. The combat boots were in stark contrast the lost girl image she projected, but they fit everything I knew about her.

“Hello jei-jei,” she greeted me with a smile.

“Hello mei-mei,” I answered her in return.

“You’ve come back.”

“It was time.” I shrugged and took another drink of my beer.

“What is time? You defy time.”

“Time is irrelevant,” I agreed and we both smiled at one another.

“You shine so pretty. I had forgotten the exact shade of green,” River stated as she ran her hand down my hair.

“You’re the first in almost forever that has seen me shine,” I explained with a sad smile. My thoughts drifted back to the beginning of my life, Glory, Mom’s death, Buffy’s death, life.

“You are real. You do exist. Blood and bone wrapped in a skintight package – how did they not see you?”

“It’s ancient history, River. Let it remain in the past where it belongs,” I asked of her.

“As you wish,” she reluctantly agreed and cocked her head to the side and smiled, “Dawnie.” She cocked her head again before I could talk and frowned. “Time’s up. We’ve been discovered!” River quickly explained.

”River, there you are…why did you wander off?” a man asked as he placed both hands on her arms. He shot me a quick glance before turning his attention back to River. “Are you all right, mei-mei?” he asked her and I took a better look at him. Simon Tam had changed a great deal since rescuing his sister.

“We are fine,” she replied and rolled her eyes over his shoulder.

Simon turned his attention back to me and tried to figure out what was going on. “I’m sorry if she was bothering you,” he apologized and tried to move River away.

“She’s never been a bother, none at all,” I replied and finished my beer.

“Um…good. We need to go River. The Captain wants us back…” he trailed off and offered me a forced smile.

I was about to rise to my feet when the sound of a shotgun loading behind me stilled my movement.

“Doc, take your sister and get out of here,” a hard female voice instructed him.

“Okay,” he quickly agreed and pulled on River’s arms to leave. She refused to budge and tried to shake his hands off her.

“Simon, Dawn’s too important to leave behind,” River calmly argued as he looked at her in shock. The woman behind me gasped slightly at the use of my name.

“An explanation of why you aren’t bitty bits in Serenity Valley would do you a world of good,” the woman instructed.

“Corporal, I’d be more than happy to explain. Perhaps it would be better explained without your weapon pointed in my general direction, more inclined to do so without that weapon in fact,” I answered and slowly turned around on my bar stool.

“Wa tsao! It’s Zoe, war’s long been over,” she corrected me.

I nodded in agreement, “The Alliance pulled me out before the bomb hit,” I lied to her. “They’ve been keeping me in their company ever since then,” I added in a little truth to make it sound plausible.

“You haven’t aged a day.”

“So it would appear,” I offered with a small shrug. It wasn’t the explanation she was looking for.

“Captain’s not going to like this,” Zoe muttered a little too loudly under her breath. She holstered her shotgun on her leg.

“To Serenity we go,” River finally spoke and offered me her hand. I took it and rose to my feet. As we left the bar Simon broke his stunned silence.

“Who is she?” he asked Zoe.

“A ghost,” was her uneasy reply.

Dawn as a Browncoat? That's an interesting image. I'd almost like to see it back in the war days... Good story.
