It wasn’t hard to sneak out of the Circus of the Damned. I just followed the same path I used with Jason hours earlier. The sunlight was bright and welcoming on my skin. I stood, just outside the main entrance and practically bathed in the warm being outside during the day afforded me. This moment was one of the few regrets I had after I was turned.

A body jostled me and my moment passed. I opened my eyes to glare at the person but they were already gone, blending in with the countless people milling about on the sidewalk. Humans. They were all humans. I breathed a slight sigh of relief and blended into the flowing river of flesh on the walk. It wasn’t hard for me to relieve a few of the people from their wallets. Petty theft was needed in times of hunger and isolation.

The Lunatic Café loomed before me. Just inside I could see the place was teeming with patrons. There were only a few empty tables in the middle of the floor. It looked to be as good a place as any to get something to eat and plan my strategy for the rest of my stay in this world. With all the other-worldly creatures I had already seen finding something to do wouldn’t be too hard.

I pushed open the glass door and made it inside. The door slid shut with a quiet whoosh and I realized I had the attention of everyone in the café. It crept up around me, slowly at first, and then all at once it encompassed me. Werewolves. The pack resided here. Each and every last one of them was pack.

I heard a girl screaming in the background and it took me a moment to realize the girl was me. With that knowledge the world lapsed in an eerie silence.

“Darla? Darla, can you hear me?” a familiar voice pulled me out of the fog swirling about in my head.

Someone was tentatively touching my shoulder. I shrugged them off and noticed I was sprawled on the floor. The tiles had such a pretty design. I looked up, taking in a café full of wary wolves. Squatting just off to my right, within arms reach, was Jason.

“Do I even want to know how you managed to walk out in the middle of the day?” he asked, trying to figure it all out.

“Probably not,” I muttered, my head throbbing.

“That’s what I thought. So, not a vampire?”

“Guess not,” I quietly confessed.

“So what are you doing here?”

“I was hungry. This looked like a decent enough place. If I knew it was full of your kind and I would have this reaction I'd have avoided it like the plague.”

“I’m hurt that you’d avoid me,” Jason teased and pouted at me. I raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

“So, puppy, how about you get me the hell out of here? And as thanks I’ll let you sit in on my part of the conversation with Jean-Claude tonight,” I offered.

“Sounds great,” he replied with a huge grin. Apparently I had offered him something he didn’t get too often. He gently pulled me to my feet, making sure I didn’t fall over. “We’re gonna have to figure out what the hell is going on with you and wereanimals.”

“More like anything supernatural. Humans don’t give me this reaction.”

“I’m sure Jean-Claude will be able to help out with all this.”

“Let’s hope,” I agreed. Steady on my feet I felt a lot better. The energy from the werewolves had diminished. They all looked fascinated though. A few looked a little too much so.

Jason led me out of the Café, dismissing the questioning glances from his pack mates. As some point he was going to have to answer, in some fashion or another.

“Any chance we can just forget that you saw me in the daylight?” I asked.

“No chance on that one,” a cold, female, voice commented as we started down the street towards the Circus.
