Prompt#89 – Exclamation – wild card – Purpose
Title: A Life Well-Lived
Disclaimer - I do not own any of these characters and/or settings. If it looks familiar - I probably didn't invent it.
Rating: FR18
In theory - all my Tara stories should follow a progression of her death in BtVS in an AU.
A/N: I am going to skip from place to place in this series. I’ll try my best to make it easy to follow. The X-Men series takes place after the completion of the Highlander series (not complete), and after the unwritten Firefly/Serenity one. After all 100 are written I will go back through and arrange these chapters in the correct order.
Please enjoy and don’t hesitate to ask for an explanation if needed.

“And you are telling me that this, Professor Xavier, needs my help?” I asked Marvin, as we stood in the In-Between.
Marvin, a balance demon and second cousin of my original world’s Whistler, nodded in response. He tried to offer me a small sympathetic smile, but it didn’t quite read right on him. He dressed like any well-paid man, or in this case demon, would. Pressed suits, shined shoes, the works, but the rhinoceros-size horn sticking out of his forehead kinda put a damper on the Wall Street chic look.
“You aren’t quite done yet, hon,” he tried to smooth it over.
“You know, this is the third world I have been forced to live in. Aren’t the Powers that Be satisfied yet?”
“Not quite, sweetie. If you stopped doing such a great job in each world…perhaps they wouldn’t want you to be their liaison. Perhaps then…then you could rest,” he suggested and I just laughed.
“They’d probably send me to my own special version of hell for that. I guess I’ll just press on. Hope for normal, hope for peace.”
“You got as close to normal and peace as you probably will ever get this last time,” he warned me.
“I know,” I quietly acknowledged. The last two years of my “life” had been wonderful, even at the end. “I have a purpose...” I whispered in addition.
“Yes, purpose and destiny and fate and whatnot. They are good guys though. I think you’ll like it there.”
“We’ll see. I’m sure I’ll see you later Marvin.” I stepped away from him and walked toward the shimmering portal forming a few feet away.
“Good luck, sweetie. I’m sure you’ll do just fine,” he called after me and I waved haphazardly over my shoulder as I stepped into the portal.

A beautifully decorated office formed around me. A gentle pop behind me alerted me to the fact that the portal had closed. I took in the place and smiled at the gentleman behind the desk.
“P-Professor Xavier, I presume,” I gently spoke. Even after all these years and everything I had been through, I still managed to revert back to my shy self upon meeting new people. He didn’t seem too surprised that I had just appeared in his office. How interesting.
“Yes, I am Professor Charles Xavier, and you are?”
“I’m T-Tara Maclay,” I introduced myself.
“And what do I owe the honor of your…appearance in my presence?” he questioned, watching me carefully.
“My purpose here is to help. It’s what I do.”
He seemed to relax at that comment and sat back in his chair, clasping his hands together in front of him.
“I, too, was told of your arrival. Please, have a seat,” he admitted and then gestured to the chair in front of his desk. I moved forward, sliding into the chair. “There is a lot that you need to know. And we must come up with a plausible explanation as to why you have come here now, and why you are staying,” he informed me and I nodded.
“Let’s stick as close to the truth as possible, makes it easier to remember things,” I suggested with a small smile.
“Yes. As close to the truth as possible is the best course to take,” he added and we began discussing my stay in earnest.
