Jason and I turned, almost in slow motion, to face the voice from behind us. “What the hell is going on?” Anita asked as she reached for her gun. I took a step back, away from her.

“Anita, calm down, it’s alright,” Jason attempted to placate her. He took a few steps to place himself between the two of us.

“She’s out in the middle of the afternoon, Jason,” Anita yelled.

“She’s not a vampire, Anita.”

“So, she just was play-acting before?”

“You assumed I was a vampire…I let you. It kept me safe, safer than if you thought I was something else,” I tried to explain.

“So, what are you?” she asked me, her face growing blank, devoid of emotion.

“Human, Anita, human. If you shoot me I’ll bleed and probably die,” I answered.

“Jason?” Anita asked.

“She smells human…slightly off but that could be because she fell from a hole in the sky.”

“Does Jean-Claude know?”

“Not yet. I plan on telling him when we meet this evening,” I added.. She relaxed a little, letting her hands hang by her sides.

“I’ll ask him when I meet with him later as well. Don’t make me tattle on you, Darla,” she urged or perhaps threatened.

“Don’t worry; I’ll share all the sunny details.”

“Please do. Jason, you’ll escort her back to the Circus?” Anita phrased it as a question, but it was definitely a request. She leveled him with a hard stare.

“We’re on our way right now,” Jason answered.

“Good, you are responsible for her until she meets with Jean-Claude,” Anita instructed him.

“Sounds fair, right, Darla?”

“Yes, Jason,” I answered and Anita slowly walked off. When she was gone from sight I finally spoke. “Is she always that wound up?” I asked. Jason laughed and started walking back to the Circus.

“Best not to talk too much about that,” he finally suggested and laughed merrily again.

Chapter Six - Prompt#65 - Vampire
**

“I’m not a vampire.” The words echoed through my head as I sat silently in Jean-Claude’s office. I had told him the truth. Not the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God, but I had told him a few truths without too many lies intermingled. It was as close to the truth as I had ever gotten. That was a foreign and somewhat frightening concept to me. Lying to this man – vampire – didn’t feel like a good idea. And now I sat there and watched him take in the information I had given him.

From my position seated across the desk he looked like a statue, unblemished porcelain, utterly still. Mere moments before he had been animated and alive before my eyes. Never in all my years had I seen something alive suddenly become so still and lifeless. He didn’t even look real for that matter. It was then that the severity of my situation began to fully sink in. There was a world of difference between what I had been and that which was sitting across from me.

Finally he must have reached a decision because he became a real thing once more. The color returned to his face in an almost eerie fashion. He caught me staring and smiled. It was an easy almost relaxed smile with a flash of fang. It was delicate and I imagined intentional. Why did I suddenly feel like prey?

“You were once a vampire, non?”

“Yes,” I answered. I’d keep my answers short and to the point. There was no need to share with him that I’d died and been reborn a few times.

“Your past is most interesting,” Jean-Claude stated and again smiled. Still the smile did nothing to relax me.

“So, now that you know all about me would you care to fill me in on the world I’m living in? Humans walking beside weres, vampires running cities, it’s all very strange,” I added.

“I doubt you’ve told me everything, Ms. Aurelius.”

“Darla, please,” I interrupted with the correction.

“You will learn all you need to know in due time,” he brushed me off. I frowned at the action. “However, the most pressing business is not the past or present, but the future. I’d like to detail how I foresee your stay in my city.”

I sighed. He had me right where he wanted me. I was stuck, under his guidance and protection, and he knew it. And I knew he would withhold as much information as he could from me. It was the nature of the beast. At least we had that much in common. It was almost comforting to learn some things transcended dimensions.
