Buffy shifted as she settled into their tiny shelter for the day. Winchester glanced over at her movement for a moment before returning his gaze toward the scraps of wreckage that separated them from the metal patrolling outside. Her skin was crawling at the close proximity to him. She was antsy, wanting to leave their hiding spot, and get away, but she dug her fingernails into her palm to calm the urge. He felt faintly like a demon, but she hadn’t felt any since Judgment Day.

She was surprised that Connor had sent her out with Winchester on this scouting mission. Normally he sent her out alone, knew anyone else would just slow her down, hinder her from completing her mission. From what she’d heard, Winchester operated alone as well, had so since his brother died a few months back.

They had been quite the team, destructive and deadly, but a complete mystery to everyone in the camp. The brothers kept to themselves and as a result the rumors spread and became wilder as time went on. She knew intimately well what it was like to lose a sibling, to lose your family.

“My little sister died four years ago,” Buffy’s whispered voice broke the silence. Out of the corner of her eye she saw him flinch and absently rub at his chest above his heart. “She uh…the metal got her. One second she was standing next to me as we scouted ahead of our group and the next…” Buffy trailed off as her chest tightened as she remembered. “She didn’t stand a chance. And I couldn’t do a damned thing to stop it, to save her.”

The silence grew, stretched between them, and Buffy wondered what had possessed her to blurt that out. She was just about to apologize when he spoke, voice soft enough that she would’ve had a hard time hearing him if not for her enhanced hearing.

“Dean didn’t want to live in this world anymore.” He sounded broken, destroyed, as he voiced the words out loud that he’d probably kept bottled up this entire time.

Buffy remained silent as she spared a glance in his direction. He pulled a wicked-looking knife with symbols on the blade and began to carve the dirt at his feet.

“We…we fought so hard to live in this world, to help others live in it, and then Judgment Day happened. And everything…every sacrifice…it just suddenly didn’t matter,” he trailed off as he viciously sank the knife into the ground. “He went out with a bang, took out as much metal as possible. But he left me, left me here in this world without him.”

Tears unexpectedly sprung to Buffy’s eyes at his words. She understood Winchester’s brother in a way that she never expected. To live in this world was difficult. And she understood Winchester too, understood the pain he was experiencing from the loss of his brother.

“I’m Buffy,” she said after a few moments of silence.

“Hmmm?” he murmured as he looked up from the ground where he’d continuing scratching at it with his knife. Symbols. He was drawing protection symbols.

“I know you’re Winchester and I’m Summers,” she started and kept his gaze. “But I used to be Buffy,” she explained and offered him a small smile.

His smile was completely unexpected and brilliant, dimples appeared that Buffy’d never seen before, and he answered, “I’m Sam.”
