I stood on the loading dock for the Hunter-Gratzner keeping a watch out for Johns. I didn’t want him to see me as I waited to board once all the other passengers were secured in their cryo-tubes.
“Why are you here?” a voice questioned behind me and I jumped. I had been zoning and didn’t hear anyone get close to me. I spun around and looked down to see a young boy.
“Excuse me?” I asked, after I decided the child was no threat to me.
“Why are you here? Why are you standing in the cargo area instead of with the passengers? You have to know that Riddick is on board. That is why you are here, right?” the boy stated.
“Riddick? I’m here because of him? Why would you even think that?” I asked, glancing back towards the ship to keep watch.
“Because, Faith, you let him get away last time,” he responded. I snapped my head back around to look at him. Immediately I wondered how this boy knew me even with my disguise and makeup.
“I don’t know who you think I am, but Faith I’m not. My name is Melissa. Now run along so I can board the ship,” I told him, venom accidentally seeped into my voice.
“I know you are Faith. It’s really hard to forget the person that saved my life,” he replied.
“And how did Faith save your life, boy?” I shot back, scanning my memory for this boy, for this face, and came up with a complete blank.
“Years ago, before you even came in contact with Riddick. There was a group of demons running loose on Earth, in California to be exact. You managed to kill all five of the group that was attacking me and then get me to the hospital. Although I was a little dainty girl then, I learned real quick that being a girl in this world will just get you an ugly death in the end,” she replied and it came back to me then.
“Jackie,” I whispered more to myself than to her.
“It is just Jack now, but yeah, that would be me. So, why are you here Faith?” Jack answered and I looked away for a moment back at the ship to watch for Johns.
“I’m here for Riddick,” I replied after a few moments.
“Why?” she questioned.
“It’s my mission to get control of Riddick.”
“So, why don’t you just take him now? He is just waiting in cryo-sleep?” Jack asked.
“Because the Alliance isn’t exactly welcome in this part of the galaxy Jack. Take a good look around you. Do you see people that are good patrons of the law? Why are you even on this planet? Do you know how dangerous it is here?” I asked her.
“Heard Richard B. Riddick had been caught and was being transferred back to the Slam. I figured I would try to hitch a ride on his last ride before returning to Ursa Luna,” she admitted and I shook my head at her.
“Unbelievable,” I muttered to myself. “Well then you need to go Jack. They are boarding the last of the passengers. Wouldn’t want to miss that opportunity to ride with the legendary Richard B. Riddick now would you?” I told her and looked away.
“You don’t have to worry. Your secret is safe with me,” she told me and I ignored her. I knew the kid wouldn’t tell anyone because I had saved her life and more importantly because she admired Riddick. My only worry with her was whether she would interfere in his capture or not. She had nothing to gain from alerting anyone to my presence aboard the Hunter-Gratzner. “See you when we wake up,” she quietly stated and disappeared from my side as quickly and quietly as she had arrived.
I waited until the captain of the ship came over to the cargo area where I was waiting.
“Ms. Lasher, all the passengers are fully engaged in cryo-sleep. As requested, you will be the last to enter into the chambers. Should we do this now or would you prefer to wait until the cargo has been completely loaded?” the captain asked me.
“We can do this now. An hour will not affect me that much,” I told him indifferently.
“Fine then Ms. Lasher, please follow me and I will personally make sure that you are safely placed in your cryo-locker,” he told me.
I followed him as he entered the ship’s passenger hold. The sedatives I had taken an hour ago were finally starting to kick in. It was the only way my body would actually accept cryo-sleep, and for only part of the trip at best. Without the sedatives I would be partially awake the whole trip. The Alliance doctors said it had to do with the primal being of the Slayer inside me.
As he shut and locked the door to my cryo-locker I let a relieved smile cross my face. I had done it. I had gained passage aboard the Hunter-Gratzner.
