Chapter Four - Prompt#45 - Dimensions

"Fresh Meat"

A solid knock on my door brought me out of my funk. I rose from the couch and from underneath the pile of clothes I had been given. I pulled the door open and Jason, the blond werewolf from earlier, stood before me. His outfit looked rather ridiculous, black leather pants and a black fishnet top. He looked like something out of a crazy, trashy romance novel.
“Yes?” I asked, not quite able to keep the smile off my face.
“I’ve been sent by Jean-Claude to make sure you feed. Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding your appearance, he takes his role as Master of the City very seriously.”
“And where is my dinner then?” I asked him.
“You’re looking at it,” he replied and tilted his head to the side to offer his neck. I chuckled slightly and frowned at my choice of food. “You looking dejected isn’t doing much for my ego.”
“Well I certainly don’t want to injure that,” I said and looked him over. “Especially because it’s so healthy,” I added, with a bit of a leer. This little puppy certainly wasn’t going to get the best of me. Jason stepped into the room and waited. “Sorry to disappoint but puppy isn’t on my menu for the evening.”
“Puppy…” he trailed off and raised an eyebrow.
“I’d like a tour of the Circus of the Damned,” I stated and he nodded, and motioned toward the door to my bedroom.

We walked by a small fast-food shop and the smell of cooking meat wafted by my nose. My stomach growled and beside me Jason tensed.
“Relax, puppy, I won’t eat anyone,” I stated and headed into the store. Jason followed after me and stood in stunned silence as I got in line. I ordered a hamburger – rare, fries and a chocolate shake. He dittoed my order and we sat down in a corner booth. It was only after I had finished everything and was working on my shake that he finally spoke.
“How’d you eat all that?” Jason questioned me.
“I was starving. It’s been awhile since I had anything,” I answered with a small shrug. Jason picked up his shake and took in a mouthful.
“I meant how did you as a vampire eat all that human food?”
“You know what they say about people who assume,” I replied, lightly.
“So, you’re not a vampire?”
“The vampires from my dimension are very different then your vampires,” I informed him.
“Different enough that they can eat human food?” he repeated.
“Yeah, we eat humans, too,” I laughed. The look on his face wasn’t as amused as I had hoped it would be. The poor child had been led a sheltered life if he didn’t appreciate the thrill of the hunt. And humans always gave the best chase.
“In the United States vampires are considered people. And people don’t eat people.”
“Do werewolves eat people?”
“Touche,” he answered. “So what else is different from your dimension?”
“We certainly weren’t legal citizens anywhere. In fact only a very select few knew about us. Those that did hunted us and we in turn hunted them.”
“The world didn’t know?”
“Not at all. The world, at large, was oblivious to the supernatural.”
“And you attacked and killed people?”
“Vampires aren’t pets, Jason. We are vicious creatures.” I took another swallow of my shake.
“What else?” he asked; I had piqued his curiosity.
“A woman mustn’t tell all of her secrets.”
“You don’t look like a vampire,” he commented.
“Why not?”
“You are beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but vampires are flawless. I see your flaws. A scar here and there. Imperfections. Vampires just aren’t like that unless they want to be…and you don’t strike me as the type to want to be ugly.”
“Interesting.”
“Plus you smell human, you smell warm, alive, and your heart beats.”
“Just won’t let a girl have secrets will you? I clearly am not from this dimension. I’m beginning to truly think I’m in Hell.”
“Why do you think you would end up in hell, Darla?” Jason asked me.
I looked up at him and caught his eye. I made sure I held his gaze as I spoke of my past. “I’m not a good person, Jason, I never was,” I admitted and he broke the gaze. We lapsed into an uncomfortable silence.
